Does Your Business Have a Daimon?
First of all, what is a daimon? Daimones, the plural of daimon, are a part of the ancient Greek spiritual landscape (Daemon in Latin). These beings were referred to by Homer, Hesiod, Socrates, and the Pythagoreans, just to name a few. There is some variation in the way different writers and groups describe them, but in general they can be useful allies to us.
Broadly speaking, they are a class of spirit beings, not goddesses or gods, who interact with humans. There are “good” daimones, who advise, guide, and protect humans, and “bad” ones that can cause misfortune, illness, and trouble. The ancient poet Hesiod spoke of heroes becoming daimones after death and could be venerated and petitioned for help.
Plato recalls Socrates describing the daimons as, “messengers who shuttle back and forth between [Gods and humans], conveying prayer and sacrifice from men to gods, while to men they bring commands from the gods and gifts in return for sacrifices . . . through them all divination passes, through them the art of priests in sacrifice and ritual, in enchantment, prophecy, and sorcery. Gods do not mix with men; they mingle and converse with us through spirits instead, whether we are awake or asleep.” (Plato, “Symposium,” 486)
Martin Nilsson, who was a scholar of Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman religious systems, wrote, “The belief in daimones peoples the world with spirits. They live in the deserts, among the mountains, in the forest, in stones, in trees, in water, in rivers and springs; they are the occasion of everything that concerns man, they send fruitfulness and dearth, good fortune and disease.” (Nilsson, History of Greek Religion, 407)
So, why should we care? In my worldview, every business has its own consciousness, or a guiding daimon, that is actively seeking expression in the 3D world. When we connect with it, we join forces to more easily download wisdom and bring it forth into form, so we can have a greater impact on people’s lives.
As an entrepreneur, we work hard managing every aspect of our business: systems, marketing, branding, client relations, accounting, etc. For those of us who are coaches, healers, and visionaries we understand how energy underlies all of material form. We might have our own spirit guides whom we work with in our private spiritual practices. What about working with the guiding spirit, or consciousness, of your business?
In my experience, when people connect with the daimon of their business and create an open channel for communication, they receive inspiration, ideas, solutions, and next steps for their business. Additionally, the daimon of your business can work on the energetic planes to call forward and guide your ideal clients towards you. There are people in the world praying for the solution, healing, and wisdom that YOU have. Why not ask the daimones to help you find each other?
